What is Super Fatted Soap?

Trace. See the drops resting on top?

Ever wonder what it means to SuperFat soap?  The term SuperFat refers to the percentage of oil that is left unchanged from the Lye when the soap is finished.  The amount of oil left in our finished soap is between 12 and 16 percent (depending on the soap), resulting in a super moisturizing and soothing bathing experience.

Superfatting our Down to Earth Shampoo Bar.

What we do with our Down To Earth Shampoo Bar is we SuperFat it with Kukui Nut and Jojoba Oils by adding them after the batch has traced;  Defined as “thick enough for drops to rest on top of mixture.”  At this point, most of the saponification process has occurred and oils you want to be fully present when using the bar can be added.  This effectively allows these two oils (Kukui Nut and Jojoba which are really beneficial to your hair and scalp) to be the ‘superfat’ in our shampoo bar! Let the food feeding skin and hair fest begin.

Five Healthy Habits to Nurture Fresh Spring Skin

DSC_0895.JPGEven our skin longs for the fresh sweet air of spring. Weeks of deprivation from daily sun kissed vitamins and replenishing hydration can leave the skin tired and lifeless … it’s time to plant the seeds for fresh, healthy skin as spring emerges.

Here are five healthy habits to nurture fresh, vibrant skin.

1. Be Gentle
Use products that are mild and gentle. The fewer ingredients* the better, and be sure that the ingredients the product does contain are emollient and nutritive, not harsh or drying. This time of year a cleansing oil is perfect. You can make your own with organic olive oil and essential oils (I use Lavender and Rosemary). Oil is actually an excellent cleanser. It feeds the skin, and removes dirt without pulling skin.

*Be aware of what you are putting on your skin. Sixty percent of what comes in contact with the skin is absorbed.  It is best to use products with pure, natural ingredients, and gentle essences.

2. Apply a Cream Daily
A deeply penetrating cream or serum can make a big difference in the balance and health of your skin. Daily use of a nutritive, hydrating and protective cream increases skins elasticity, vibrancy and overall health.  Each person has unique skin that is adapting and changing as environmental conditions change. Carefully choose a high-quality cream that is right for YOU.

3. Increase Hydration
Your skin is a mirror of your bodies hydration level. For soft, youthful skin that is plump and supple be sure to drink plenty of water. In addition, it doesn’t hurt to further hydrate skin by bathing, misting, or submerging. When a conveniently cool pool of water is lacking, we LOVE a skin rejuvenating spritz.

4. Eat Healthy and Get Fresh Air
True beauty really is cultivated from the inside out. The health and balance of your entire body is reflected by the skin. To help nurture your complextion from within, take a daily dose of vitamins, including fish oils, eat ample portions of fresh foods, and get outside everyday.

5. Find Your Happy Place
Stress is another thing that can show on your skin. Relax, meditate, visualize, do yoga or just find your happy place. Do this every day for 15 minutes. Carve out this time for yourself and make sure you do it. This, above all else, will give you the benefit you seek.

Therapeutic Detox Bath

It is said, that you first must let go of the old, to make way for the new. It’s time to do this for your body.

To start the new year fresh, with a high-functioning, clear and nouished body, a therapeutic detox bath is the answer.  The skin is the largest organ of ingestion. The body can easily assimilate the beneficial nutrients added to the bath water through the herbs, oils and salts. This bath will cleanse the body of toxins stored over the course of everyday living, and replenish and recharge with vital nutrients thus clearing the way for better balance.

The recipe for the bath is simple. Just combine one cup of epsom salts with two cups of baking soda. We add essential oils (grapefruit, rosemary, fennel and juniper) and some Magnesium oil, a critical mineral for nerve and muscle function. If those ingredients aren’t easily available, below are some suggestions for effective variations found in your kitchen.

  • a bag of organic Green Tea
  • the juice and peel of one fresh organic lemon
  • ginger root gratings (placed in a muslin tea bag or tea ball)
  • a quarter of a teaspoon of any of these  essential oils (grapefruit, rosemary, fennel, juniper)
  • The water for this bath should be drawn very hot. Stay in the bath as long as you can, keeping the water hot. Soak up the goodness and let go of the rest.  If possible, you should detox bathe twice in the same day. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
