Weeks of deprivation from daily sun kissed vitamins and replenishing hydration can leave the skin tired and lifeless … it’s time to plant the seeds for fresh, healthy skin as spring emerges.

Here are five healthy habits to nurture fresh, vibrant skin.

1.	Be Gentle
Use products that are mild and gentle. The fewer ingredients* the better, and be sure that the ingredients the product does contain are emollient and nutritive, not harsh or drying. This time of year a cleansing oil is perfect. You can make your own with organic olive oil and essential oils (I use Lavender and Rosemary). Oil is actually an excellent cleanser. It feeds the skin, and removes dirt without pulling skin.

*Be aware of what you are putting on your skin. Sixty percent of what comes in contact with the skin is absorbed. It is best to use products with pure, natural ingredients, and gentle essences.

2.	Apply a Cream Daily
A deeply penetrating cream or serum can make a big difference in the balance and health of your skin. Daily use of a nutritive, hydrating and protective cream increases skins elasticity, vibrancy and overall health. Each person has unique skin that is adapting and changing as environmental conditions change. Carefully choose a high-quality cream that is right for YOU.

3.	Increase Hydration
Your skin is a mirror of your bodies hydration level. For soft, youthful skin that is plump and supple be sure to drink plenty of water. In addition, it doesn’t hurt to further hydrate skin by bathing, misting, or submerging. When a conveniently cool pool of water is lacking, we LOVE a skin rejuvenating spritz.

4.	Eat Healthy and Get Fresh Air
True beauty really is cultivated from the inside out. The health and balance of your entire body is reflected by the skin. To help nurture your complextion from within, take a daily dose of vitamins, including fish oils, eat ample portions of fresh foods, and get outside everyday.

5.	Find Your Happy Place
Stress is another thing that can show on your skin. Relax, meditate, visualize, do yoga or just find your happy place. Do this every day for 15 minutes. Carve out this time for yourself and make sure you do it. This, above all else, will give you the benefit you seek.

I love essential oils … the composition and natural characteristics of the flower, shrub, tree, or root from which the essence is distilled offers skin loving nutrients and natural healing properties. They are highly concentrated, not oily, and contain the natural components and benefits of the plant. These attributes have helped the plant survive and defend itself against the elements, and are powerful forces. Essential oils have been used for centuries in beauty and health recipes. They are amazingly diverse and vary in smell, texture, viscosity, and beneficial properties. They provide the best nature can offer for youthful skin and they can do this by helping your skin generate new skin cells at a quicker rate.

We just made a Winter Face Oil (for added protection from the dry Minnesota Winter) that I also use as an after shave. My skin soaks it up quickly, and it soothes the razor burn as it nourishes my skin. It can be easily reproduced at home.

Recipe: In a one ounce bottle with a Rose Hip Seed Oil base, combine essential oils; Three drops Sandalwood, three drops Rose Absolute, three drops Hyssop, three drops Chamomile German, ten drops Evening Primrose, and five drops of Carrot healing oil.

It’s the best after shave I’ve used because it smells good and it gives my skin fresh plant essences and nothing artificial. If you want us to mix you up a bottle, just comment to this post, or send us an email and we’ll get one out to you!

Bath-On-A Stick, the bodylish creation for the fair, is an enticing ball of pink and white swirled together artfully with ingredients including Sweet Almond and Jojoba oils, and an aromatic essential oil blend of lemon, rosemary, cinnamon, lavender and sage … making a bomb that is sweet and fresh smelling, and just as delicious to use. Bath-On-A Stick is a delicious treat, leaving a body feeling great and skin tenderly soft.

Bodylish products have long been a favorite for shoppers at the local handmade boutique, i Like You, in Northeast Minneapolis. When the i Like You owners, Angela and Sarah, got a booth at the State Fair, Bodylish was quickly selected as a contributing artisan. The i like you Handmade Market at the Fair will be located in the lower level of the Grand Stand. The market will feature other local handmade stars including Adam Turman, Giraffe, and XO Handworks to name a few. Other Bodylish products at the Fair will include Bath-On-A Stick as well as the Bodylish classic thePEACE bomb, a calendula and jasmine iLikeYou bomb, a shampoo bar called Down To Earth, and a capable and dependable liquid soap, FarmHand.

Jay and Nora Schaper began Bodylish in 1999 by combining Nora’s desire for natural and healthy daily care products with Jay’s entrepreneurial farm experience and zest for business. They have been making and selling their hand crafted soaps, bath products, oils, and creams as they share tips for naturally living and promote good living on their website. Bodylish sells directly to consumers online at Bodylish.com as well as Farmers’ Markets and Craft Fairs.

Nora, Jay and their two boys live in Kingfield, Minneapolis, on their urban farm complete with free roaming chickens and a large vegetable garden. They live as naturally as possible and share their lifestyle tips with the world via the Bodylish blog at www.Bodylish.com and www.posterous.bodylish.com.

In salute to all those hard working feet out there, bodylish will include a STAND ON LOTUS flowering foot fizz with every order until May 15!

Whew, what a weekend. Who knew that mid-April in Minnesota means head to the garden? You’ve got to make hay when the sun is shining, as my ancestral farmers proclaimed, and we listened. A weekend of great gardening weather wreaks havoc on a body after a Minnesota winter and it’s time to give my feet a COFFEE BREAK.

The feet are often forgotten. They work tirelessly for a body, and get very little tender loving attention. Here’s a perk that’s sure to work, and you likely have everything you need.

Gather these things:

1/4 cup sea salt

1 tbl freshly ground coffee beans

1 tbl ground vanilla beans

1/4 cup oil (olive or almond)

1 pot of coffee, at room temperature

whipped cream

Then just follow these steps:

Mix salt, coffee and vanilla beans and oil in a bowl.

Pour the pot of coffee in a basin and add the whipped cream.

Place feet in the basin and soak for about 10 minutes.

Rub feet and calves with a scoop of the salt mixture, concentrating on callused areas.

Rinse feet with warm water, dry them lightly with a towel, and follow up with a hydrating moisturizer.

The caffeine in the coffee reduces redness and swelling, and the salt, coffee grinds and vanilla beans – along with the lactic acid (in the whipped cream) - are all natural exfoliants.

For the past several months, I have made the conscious choice to go media free. I have given up television, radio, and print media to focus on the “micro life” of everyday living. I have made some remarkable discoveries. I think I have found the secret to happy living.

Discovery #1: I find that I can hear my own thoughts much more clearly, and in many regards, I feel as though my life has slowed to the point of awareness of each passing moment. I feel alive and eager.

Discovery #2: I feel more relaxed and happy … free to roam like a cowgirl out on the range, appreciating the simple pleasures of a starry night and bright dawn.

Discovery #3: I have found more satsifaction in each day. I am unencumbered by thoughts of politics, violence or “things” that I want but don’t have. I find I have positive connections with others and more time for meaningful interactions.

Discovery #4: Most important of all, I have realized that everything I really need is mine already. Each day I choose my path for the beauty and pleasure it provides.

Yes, it’s true … all this from tuning out the words of others and tuning in the voice from within. From where I stand, this is the good life. But, I’m always looking to improve. At this moment, one way to make this good life better, is to share the goodness with others.

In honor happy living, every internet order of $25 or more in the month of March gets a FREE bodylish COWGIRL Spritz.

Live HAPPY TODAY!

As an entrepreneur, almost every waking moment of each day is spent on bodylish. It is a rare treat to have time away from the obligations of my business. It surprises me to learn, as I sit here soaking in the feeling of complete and utter happiness, that I am actually accomplishing more for the business than a day full of tasks. I am freeing my mind to recharge and think outside the confines of the list to true inspiration and motivation from within.

So, here are my words to you, dear reader. Take a break … go on vacation … and let the inspiration begin.

According to wikipedia, Down to Earth is an English idiom meaning ‘practical and realistic.’ That definition fits our belief. Here at bodylish, our products are not only handmade, they are practical and realistic.

I’ve been hand making daily care products for years now. The main motivation to handmake products was because of the ingredients used in mass produced overly processed products. Yuck. I am happily POO free and super selective about everything I put ON my body. I love the Down to Earth bar, it is chock full of nut butters, and nourishing oils. It leaves your hair and body feeling great. And WOW, the peppermint and rosemary together is inspiring. Everything about it is memorable.

Well, that’s the good news. The bad news is that we sold the last bar yesterday. Yikes. Today is Down to Earth Shampoo Bar making day! Unfortunately, it won’t be ready until March 5.

Right now, we are melting the butters and measuring the oils (olive, castor, coconut, kukui nut, cocoa, jojoba, and sweet almond) and we have prepared the lye. Once the lye cools and all the butters are melted we will combine and mix, mix, mix until it thickens into what soapmakers call a ‘trace’. Then the peppermint and rosemary essential oil blend is added and the soap is poured into a mold and covered to cure for a month.

Alas, we will all have to wait. I’m not saying it will be easy. Once March arrives and the Down to Earth is cut and trimmed, your hair and body will thank you.

Don’t forget, you need to do your BODY good!
